Tell us about your children. What do they like to do for fun?

Alex has 2 biological children. He is about his children:
My seven year old is a second grader whose interests include science, reading, jokes, “Ninja Warrior” (watching the show and praccing it at the park down the street), and video games. At dinner, she regales us with stories about her day, random thoughts she has (which are many and amusing), math problems she makes up, and everything she wants to do in the near and short term (lately it’s going to Disneyworld and Harry Poer World). She loves playing with her older sister, going to the Children’s Museum in our city, planning play dates and pares with her friends, trying new things–this past year was soccer, which she seems to be mostly
over–drawing pictures and comics, and all kinds of animals. Her teachers have told us how she helps her classmates at school when they don’t understand something or struggle focusing. She also has several stuffed animals and toys that she likes to play “babies” with.

My 11-year old is a 6th grader who loves nothing more than reading and wring; she recently completed her third novel for the NaNoWriMo (Naonal Novel Wring Month) project at her school; her book this year was over 10,000 words! She also loves music (listening to the Beatles and Taylor Swi, playing the viola), spending me with her friends, and going out for bubble tea. She is a great role model for her younger sister, and sll plays video games and even dolls with her in the evenings while dinner is cooking. She believes strongly in jusce and equality (she’s in the Straight and Gay Alliance at her school), and is excited to take a musical theater class this winter. She has also been asking to take a babysing class now that she’s 11, which we plan to sign her up for a er the holidays.
Laura has 2 step-children. She is about her step-children:
My older step daughter has matured so quickly! She only stopped playing with dolls and make-believe with her lile sister within the last 9 months. It’s been a big transion. She’s more of a teenager than a child now. She’s extremely smart, the youngest but most mature 6th grader in her class. She has a high school reading level and started reading just before she turned 3.
I’ve seen video proof! She’s in a DLI school program where she takes all classes in English and in Spanish. At her recent parent teacher conference, her teacher said she helps and supports others; even though she’s so advanced, she doesn’t get frustrated with others’ quesons. She’s kind and passionate. I whole-heartedly agree.
Since we came into each other’s lives over 4 years ago, she has always been strong, asserve and had a smile like golden sunshine. Within the first month of spending me together back when she was 7, I remember she grabbed my hand and said “I wish you were my mom, too.” She has always loved dance pares, playing dress-up, playing school and making schedules or plans. You’ll almost always find her reading, wring (stories, her novel or journal entries) or drawing. Her favorite book is The Diar y of Anne Frank. Of course I asked her why, and she said she just loves the way Anne thinks and describes her life.
Inspired by graphic novelists like Raina Telgemeier, she’s really honed her own style to become an incredible cartoonist and oen draws hilarious depicons of “middle school life”. The pandemic caused her to miss out on many low pressure social opportunies, so we’re encouraging more hangouts with friends (old and new) and have encouraged her to enroll in a musical theater class. She’s truly an amazing singer and has always surprised us with original songs she writes and performs. Her dad helps put guitar music to them and has started giving her guitar lessons when she asks. She loves boba tea, Harry Poer, trips to the library or bookstore, The Beatles, and adding to her earring collecon. Above all else, she’s a kind, loyal
and loving daughter and has always accepted me as one of her 3 parents. She’s also a wonderful big sister, incredibly paent and helpful to her younger sister. They seriously never fight physically and rarely verbally disagree. It’s astonishing.
My younger step daughter is 7, soon to be 8. She loves to play with everything she gets her hands on for as much me as she can squeeze out a day. She is a day dreamer and oen loses track of me as her imaginaon takes her somewhere else. She likes My Lile Pony, Harry Poer, LOL Dolls, and American Girl Dolls; She loves video games, especially Mario Brothers and Minecra (she prefers creave mode). Because we manage screen me, there was a me
where she loved Mario Brothers so much that she would make Mario character puppets and put on puppet shows for us with her sister. She loves snuggling and “blank ckles” (i.e. back ckles), reading, playing with toys in the bathtub, and playing with all the young kids in our neighborhood. She plays rec league soccer (her dad and I coach), and she cheers the other kids on when they get frustrated because she’s not compeve - just wants to have fun and be with her friends. Thanks to a unit in gym class, she’s goen very into American Ninja Warrior, watching the show with her dad and taking brave risks on the monkey bars. She’s geng stronger every day!
She is truly kind and loving but strong and asserve with her boundaries. I’m so impressed by her. Like her big sister, she’s in a DLI program, learning in Spanish and English. She can be such a silly goof, laughs hysterically out loud at funny Youtube videos and loves making up jokes or trying to trick us with riddles and math problems. She’s an incredibly strong reader (taking a er her sister and her dad). One of the greatest joys of my life was watching her learn to read - from sing on her dad’s lap praccing Hop on Pop to the day she suddenly read me a book for the first me - and I listened with tears in my eyes, trying not to get over emoonal and interrupt the story. Recently, we’ve discovered she has a big talent for math and is doing advanced lessons with her teachers! Last Friday evening, she spent her night solving a difficult addion word story problem. I was amazed by her ability and her focus.
She was nearing age 4 when we came into each other's lives. I remember being in the kitchen and the three of them in the living room. I smiled at her, and she ran across the room to me shoung “I love you!” then leaping up into my arms. Her dad commented that she rarely ever said that to him or anyone. Spending me with her and her cute silliness is just magic.
The privilege of parenng these incredible girls is what has made me realize this huge dream inside me to expand our family and become a mom.

Disney Movie

In childhood: Aladdin. In adulthood: I love Enchanted because the princess remains earnest and posive even though the real life city around her is so jaded - and she saves herself and her man; I appreciate the new sequel Disenchanted where she is now a stepmom and the movie takes on the ‘wicked stepmother’ stereotype. Aer reading a Cinderella story, my own step daughter once said, “I’m so glad you’re a nice stepmother”; a kid at our park once said: “You’re her stepmom? But you’re so nice!”
